Why talk-time balance matters
Talk time is the most honest metric a meeting has. Decisions made after one voice held 70% of the room are usually that person's decisions with an audience, and the expertise that stayed silent was paid to sit there. Balance is not about equal shares; a briefing is allowed to be one-sided. It is about whether the people who came to contribute actually got the floor.
What facilitators do about imbalance
- Name it gently. "We have heard a lot from two people, I want two more views before we decide."
- Go around the room on the decision question, briefly and by name.
- Move status to writing so the meeting spends its minutes on discussion, not recitation.
- Watch the trend, not one meeting. A single dominated session is an event; a dominated series is a culture.

Frequently asked questions
What counts as a balanced meeting?
As a rule of thumb: the most active voice under 40% and no participant under 10% reads as a healthy discussion. One voice over 50% means the meeting was effectively a briefing.
Where do I get the minutes per speaker?
Estimate them; the shape matters more than precision. If your meetings run through MeetriX, per-speaker talk time is measured automatically from the transcript.
Is unequal talk time always bad?
No. A briefing, a training session, or a board presentation is supposed to be one-sided. The verdict matters for meetings that claim to be discussions or decisions.
